Automotive SEO backlinks
A franchised dealer, a leasing broker and a parts retailer all sit in "automotive", and they need different links pointing at different pages. Start by working out which one you are.
Dealer, brand, broker or parts: pick one
A franchised dealer sells one or two manufacturers' cars from a handful of sites, and its pages compete in a 30-mile radius. Many dealers run on a website platform supplied by the manufacturer or a dealer-website vendor, which limits what pages they can add. The manufacturer's own UK site holds the national model terms, and a dealer will rarely outrank it for "[model] review".
Independent used car dealers, leasing brokers, parts and accessories retailers, and garages have more freedom and more competition. Leasing brokers fight comparison sites and parts retailers fight marketplaces, while a garage is up against directories and the dealer down the road.
So the first job is to decide where you can actually win, then build pages for it. For a dealer group that's usually location pages, service and MOT pages and used-car category pages ("used hybrids in Coventry"). For a broker, it's model-specific lease pages and running-cost guides. For a parts retailer, it's category and fitment pages, which overlap a lot with our ecommerce advice.
What makes automotive links different
Stock pages die
Vehicle detail pages exist until the car sells, then they 404 or redirect. Any link pointing at one is worth something for a few weeks. Never use a stock page as a target URL. The Live Link Tracker in Rankticker checks that each live link still resolves to its target, but it's easier not to create the problem.
The calendar is set by the plate change
The UK age identifier changes every six months, in March and September, and new-car demand bunches around it. Links that support new-car pages want to be live by February and August. Used car, servicing and accessories content follows its own season: winter tyres and battery care in autumn, convertibles and roof boxes in spring, dashcams and gadgets in gift guides before Christmas and Father's Day.
Enthusiasts are a real audience
Few industries have as many specialist publications run by people who care. Owners' club sites, classic car titles, EV blogs, 4x4 and van communities. They have modest DR and loyal readers. For a specialist dealer or a parts brand, one of those is probably worth more than a general news link. Which one sends buyers who already know what a swirl-mark polish is? The referral traffic answers that. Our piece on topical relevance versus DR argues the point properly.
Formats that earn their place
Regional news
Dealer and garage stories with a local hook: a new site, an apprentice intake, an EV charging hub, a charity event. Still the strongest local signal for dealer groups.
Product reviews and gift guides
For accessories, tools, car care and tech. Ship the product, accept the reviewer's honest view, and make sure the article is labelled.
Data-led digital PR
Workshop and sales data make good stories: the MOT failure items your workshop sees most, or real-world EV range in a cold January. Motoring desks and regional news pick these up.
Expert commentary and AI Optimized Articles
A head of service or a finance manager answering the questions buyers ask: PCP versus leasing, or whether an eight-year-old EV battery is a worry. These also suit the comparison prompts people put to AI assistants.
Building the campaign in Rankticker
In the marketplace, filter by the automotive category, country United Kingdom and language English. DR 25 and up with real organic traffic is a fair floor for enthusiast and regional titles; set it higher for national motoring and finance content. Filter article type to product review if you're seeding accessories, or to news/PR for dealer stories. The AI badge marks publications verified as sources AI models cite.
Anchors should look like motoring copy. Brand, brand plus town for dealers, model names for brokers ("Kia EV3 lease deals" reads naturally on a leasing page), and descriptive phrases for guides. We'd keep generic commercial terms like "cheap car leasing" out of paid placements entirely.

Example campaign (illustrative only): an independent EV leasing broker. Objective "Improve backlink profile"; monthly budget £2,500; geo United Kingdom; niche automotive; target URLs the "EV running costs" guide, the salary sacrifice explainer and three model lease pages; anchors brand, model names, "how salary sacrifice works for EVs"; max cost per link £350; Auto mode outside plate-change months, Semi-auto in January and July when you want to choose each placement.
Measuring it and AI visibility
The SEO Performance tab shows your DR trend, referring domains, ranking keywords and position changes, so you can see whether model and location pages are moving after links land. It also recommends backlink opportunities matched to your niche and current gaps.
On the AI side, car buyers ask "best family EV under £35,000", "is a used Tesla Model 3 a good buy", "PCP or lease for 8,000 miles a year". Answers tend to cite motoring reviews, consumer test sites, leasing and finance guides and owner forums. Google notes that AI Overviews can use query fan-out across subtopics, which rewards brands that show up on several of those source types. Track the prompts in the AIO Performance tab.

Rules that apply to motoring content
Sponsored articles are marketing. CAP Code section 19 says motoring marketing must not condone or encourage unsafe or irresponsible driving, which catches more lifestyle copy about 0–60 times than people expect. Any mention of finance terms is a financial promotion, and CONC 3.3.1R requires it to be clear, fair and not misleading. Paid links should carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" under Google's guidelines; you set the attribute per order.
Automotive checklist

- No speed or unsafe driving claims in sponsored copy
FAQ
Questions about automotive SEO backlinks
Should automotive backlinks point at vehicle listing pages?
No. Individual stock pages disappear when the car sells, and the link goes with it. Point links at model pages, location pages, service and MOT pages, buying guides and finance explainers.
What publications work for car dealer link building?
Regional news for local dealers, motoring magazines and enthusiast sites for brand and model content, EV and technology titles for electric models, and fleet and business car press for leasing and company car work.
When is the best time to build links for a car dealer?
Before the March and September plate changes, when new-car buying peaks. Placements need a few weeks to be crawled, so book them in January and July.
Do advertising rules apply to sponsored motoring articles?
Yes. CAP Code section 19 covers motoring marketing, including not encouraging unsafe driving, and any car finance wording falls under the FCA's clear, fair and not misleading rule. Sponsored content must also be identifiable as marketing.
