Use cases
Link building for SaaS
SaaS buyers shortlist on comparison pages, review platforms and AI answers before they ever book a demo. Your links need to show up in those places, pointed at the pages that sell.

The problem
Why links for software work differently
Most SaaS sites have plenty of links. They just point at the wrong page.
Integration marketplaces, partner directories, podcast show notes and funding announcements all link to the homepage. Meanwhile the pages that close deals, like "/compare/you-vs-competitor", "/integrations/salesforce" or "/use-cases/agencies", sit with three referring domains each and lose to affiliate listicles and review platforms.
Software search is also unusually commercial. Who wrote the list you are hoping to appear on? Queries like "[competitor] alternatives", "best help desk software for startups" and "[product] pricing" decide shortlists, and the results are crowded with roundups that vendors pay to appear in. Some of those roundups are useful. Many are refreshed every quarter, and a link that was there in March is gone in June.
Then there is the reader. A product manager or a developer can tell within two paragraphs whether a guest post was written by someone who has used the tool. Thin "10 tips for productivity" articles on general business blogs probably do little for you with that audience, and because the site around them covers everything from mortgages to meal prep, they say very little about your topic to a search engine either.
Placements
Publications and formats that earn their price
Match the publication to the buyer you sell to, then pick the format that fits how that buyer researches.
Category roundups
Link insertions in established "best X tools" articles. Check traffic to the specific URL, not just the domain, and how often it is edited.
Trade and vertical press
Martech, HR tech, devops or fintech publications your buyers already read. Guest posts here work when they teach something specific.
Data-led pieces
Anonymised, aggregated product data ("median time to first response across 4,000 support teams") gives editors a reason to cite you.
Product reviews
Hands-on reviews with screenshots and pricing. They rank for "[product] review" and get picked up by AI answers on the same question.
AI Optimized Articles
Structured, factual pieces placed on publications marked AI in the marketplace, written so a model can lift a clean answer and a citation.
Targets
Where to point links and which anchors to use
Pick target pages by what they rank for, not by what you would like them to rank for. Pull the queries from Search Console, map each one to a page, and build to the pages sitting on page two for commercial terms.
| Page type | Why link to it | Anchor style that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Comparison and alternatives pages | Closest to the purchase, and the queries AI assistants answer most often | Partial match ("compare it with Zendesk"), branded |
| Feature and use-case pages | Rank for problem queries from buyers who haven't picked a category yet | Descriptive phrases, some partial match |
| Integration pages | Long-tail "X + Y integration" queries with high intent | Exact product names, which read naturally |
| Glossary and templates | Easy to link editorially, pass relevance to the rest of the site | Topic phrases |
| Pricing page | Rarely worth a paid link; it ranks on brand already | Branded only |
Keep most anchors branded or naked URL. Exact-match commercial anchors like "best CRM software" belong in a small minority of placements, spread across different publications and months. Our anchor text guide covers the reasoning.

Setting up a SaaS campaign
In the marketplace, start with the niche filter set to software and technology, then add the vertical you sell into (HR, finance, marketing). Set country and language to where your revenue comes from, not where you're headquartered. A UK-based tool selling mostly to US mid-market teams should buy mostly US-read publications.
Use a traffic floor to cut sites that rank for nothing, and check the TF:CF ratio and sponsored-outbound share on each publisher profile. A software blog where most outbound links are paid is a link seller with a blog attached.
Semi-auto mode suits most SaaS teams. The campaign proposes placements with a reason ("DR 58 · strong B2B software overlap · low spam score") and you approve the ones that fit your positioning.

Example only: a B2B help desk tool selling in the UK and US. Objective: improve backlink profile. Monthly budget £3,000 to £5,000. Geo: US and UK, weighted to the US. Targets: three comparison pages, two integration pages. Anchors: 60% branded or URL, 30% partial match, 10% exact. Max cost per link £450. Filters: software niche, English, DR 35+, organic traffic 5,000+, AI badge preferred for half the budget. Illustrative figures, not a quote or a forecast.
AI visibility
What buyers ask AI about software
The prompts are specific and comparative: "best project management tool for a 15-person agency", "cheaper alternative to [competitor] with SSO", "does [product] integrate with HubSpot". The answer usually names three to five products and cites a handful of pages.
Those pages tend to be review platforms, community threads and editorial roundups. Profound's analysis of 680 million AI citations found G2 among ChatGPT's most cited domains, alongside Wikipedia, Reddit and Forbes. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use "query fan-out" across related searches, which pulls in a wider set of supporting pages than a normal results page (Google Search Central).
So the practical work is getting your product described accurately on the editorial roundups and review-style pages that already get cited. The AIO Performance tab shows which publications AI engines cite in your niche, and you can buy from them directly.

SaaS link building checklist
- Map every commercial query to one target page before buying anything
- Put comparison and integration pages ahead of the homepage
- Filter publishers by your buyers' vertical as well as "software"
- Look at the roundup URL's own traffic before buying a link insertion
- Keep exact-match anchors to a small share, spread over months
- Supply product screenshots and real pricing for reviews
- Label sponsored content clearly; the ASA expects ads to be obviously identifiable, and competitor comparisons fall under the CAP Code's misleading advertising section
- Track the prompts buyers use, not just keywords
Google treats links bought to manipulate rankings as link spam and asks for paid links to carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". You choose the link attribute per order. We vet publishers for real readership and topical fit, and we don't promise rankings.
FAQ
Questions about link building for SaaS
Should SaaS link building target the homepage?
Mostly no. Integrations, partner directories and press already send links to the homepage. Paid placements usually do more on feature, use-case, comparison and integration pages that rank for buying queries.
Are links in 'best tools' roundups worth buying?
They can be, because buyers and AI assistants both read those lists. Check the roundup's traffic and how often it is updated, and expect the publisher to edit it over time. Rankticker's Live Link Tracker keeps checking that your link and anchor are still there.
What DR floor makes sense for a SaaS campaign?
There is no fixed number. A DR 40 developer blog with real readers in your category often beats a DR 75 general site. Set a modest DR floor, then filter hard on niche, traffic and spam score.
How do I measure AI visibility for a software product?
Track the prompts your buyers ask, such as 'best CRM for a 10-person agency', and see which brands and sources the answers cite. The AIO Performance tab in each Rankticker project tracks visibility, share of voice and citation share by engine.
