Fashion and beauty link building

Fashion and beauty brands get talked about on Instagram and TikTok, and those mentions rarely help search. The links that do come from editorial round-ups, reviews and gift guides, planned months ahead.

Where fashion and beauty links actually come from

A creator posts your serum to 400,000 followers. Sales spike for a week. Your organic rankings for "vitamin C serum" don't move, because a link in a social post isn't an editorial link on an indexed publisher page. That's the gap most fashion and beauty brands live with.

The links that move search sit on editorial sites: beauty and fashion magazines, lifestyle and women's interest titles, men's style sites, wedding and occasion-wear publications, sustainable fashion blogs, regional lifestyle magazines. Many of them earn a large share of their money from affiliate commerce content, and that shapes a lot. Editors want products their readers will buy through a link, they write round-ups more than features, and they plan seasonal content well ahead of the season.

It also makes sponsored placements a smaller part of the mix than in, say, SaaS. You'll still use them. We think they work best when they look like the round-ups and reviews those sites already publish, because that's what the readers came for.

Formats that work, and when

Gift guides

Christmas, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Father's Day. Bigger titles plan Christmas gifting in summer. If your placement goes live in late November, it misses the crawl and the peak.

Product reviews

Send the product and let the reviewer test it properly. A considered review with real photos of the texture or the fit outlasts a sponsored post that reads like your own copy.

Expert commentary

A cosmetic chemist on ingredient myths, or a buyer on how a trend will actually wear. Lifestyle editors use quotes like these in evergreen pieces that stay up for years.

Data-led stories and AI Optimized Articles

Your own sales data ("the shade that sold out in every UK region") makes a good regional news story. AI Optimized Articles suit the comparison questions people ask assistants, such as retinol versus bakuchiol.

Press releases still get used for launches and collaborations, especially in trade press for retail buyers. Our breakdown of digital PR, guest posts and link insertions covers the trade-offs.

Pick target pages that will still exist next year

Fashion ranges turn over every season. A link to this spring's linen dress is worth very little once the page redirects to a category in September, or 404s. Point most links at pages that last: collection and category pages ("linen dresses", "SPF moisturisers"), evergreen bestsellers, ingredient and fabric guides, size and fit guides, and the sustainability page if you can back it up.

Anchor text in this niche should read like an editor wrote it. Brand names and product names carry most of it ("the Acme Daily Glow serum"), with descriptive category phrases ("a lightweight SPF 50 for oily skin") for maybe a quarter of links. Exact-match commercial anchors like "cheap summer dresses" are out of place in a round-up. Would you click it? Readers notice, and so do editors. More in our anchor text guide.

Setting it up in Rankticker

Filter the marketplace by fashion, beauty or lifestyle, country United Kingdom and language English. Set article type to product review or sponsored post depending on the format. Fashion is visual, so check the image terms on each publisher profile, along with links per post and the anchor policy. DR 30 with steady organic traffic is a fair floor; a smaller specialist beauty blog with an engaged readership can justify dropping it.

In the cart you set each placement up separately: target URL, anchor, article type, and whether you supply the content or Rankticker writes it. For a product review you'll usually want the publisher's own voice.

Each placement gets its own target URL, anchor and content settings.

Example campaign (illustrative only): a UK skincare brand. Objective "Improve AI visibility"; monthly budget £3,000; geo United Kingdom; niche beauty; target URLs the "SPF moisturisers" collection, the vitamin C ingredient guide and two core bestsellers; anchors brand, product names, "how to layer vitamin C with SPF"; max cost per link £400; Semi-auto from June to October so you choose the gift-guide placements yourself.

AI visibility for fashion and beauty

People ask assistants "best vitamin C serum for sensitive skin", "is this brand cruelty-free", "sustainable alternatives to fast fashion for workwear". The answers draw on editorial round-ups, review sites, dermatologist and expert commentary, and community forums. Being in the round-up is what gets you named in the answer.

The AIO Performance tab shows your share of voice for the prompts you track, how often you're cited, and answer sentiment by engine. Sentiment matters here more than in most niches. If AI answers keep repeating an old complaint about a formula, more links won't fix that, but fresh reviews on cited publications can change what gets quoted.

Claims, filters and disclosure

Beauty claims get a lot of scrutiny. CAP Code section 12 covers beauty products: objective claims need evidence, and "cure" or "rejuvenation" language is generally not acceptable for cosmetics. In 2021 the ASA warned that filters that exaggerate a product's effect are likely to mislead, after rulings against two tanning brands. Aesthetic clinics should know that Botox is a prescription-only medicine and cannot be advertised to the public.

For fashion, sustainability claims fall under the CMA's guidance for the fashion retail sector. Every paid or gifted placement must be obviously identifiable as marketing, and Google asks for paid links to carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". Our view on paid links explains how we handle that.

FAQ

Questions about fashion and beauty link building

Do social media mentions help fashion SEO?

Indirectly. They build demand and branded searches, but links in social posts are not editorial links on indexed publisher pages. You still need coverage on fashion, beauty and lifestyle publications.

When should beauty brands pitch Christmas gift guides?

Months before December. Print and larger online titles plan gift content in the summer, and smaller sites a few weeks later. A placement booked in November is usually too late to be crawled and ranking for gifting searches.

Should fashion backlinks point at product pages?

Only for core products that stay in the range. Seasonal products sell out and get removed, so most links should go to collection and category pages, ingredient or fabric guides and evergreen bestsellers.

What ASA rules apply to beauty product reviews?

Objective claims about what a product does need evidence (CAP Code rule 12.1), filters that exaggerate a product's effect are likely to mislead, and paid or gifted content must be clearly identifiable as marketing. Prescription-only treatments such as Botox cannot be advertised to the public.

Can I use the AI badge to find beauty publications?

Yes. Listings marked AI are publications verified as sources that AI models cite. Filter the marketplace by beauty or fashion and look for the badge when your goal is AI visibility.
